Custom website or template? The honest version.

A template costs $16 a month and you make every change yourself, forever. A custom build costs $750 to $2,500 and someone else makes them within 4 hours. That is the entire trade, and which side of it you want depends on one thing.

The one thing: whether work arrives because somebody searched, or only because somebody referred you.

The short answer

Buy the template until the site has to earn

A drag-and-drop template is the correct purchase for a contractor whose jobs all arrive by referral. It is fast to stand up, it costs less than a tank of diesel a month, and no argument about page speed changes the math when the website is a business card.

A custom build starts making sense the moment the site is supposed to produce work. At that point the questions stop being about looks and start being about which pages exist, how fast they load, and how long a price change takes to go live.

Those three are where a template stops being cheap and starts being expensive in a currency that does not show up on the invoice.

The honest part

Where a template genuinely wins

A template is the right call if your budget is under $500, you need something online this week, or a website is not how your work actually arrives. A one-truck operator running entirely on referrals does not need a $500-a-month retainer, and no argument on this page changes that. Buy the template, spend the difference on the truck.

The structural gap

A template has no page for the question being asked

A five-page template gives you Home, About, Services, Gallery and Contact. Nobody searches any of those. They search “how much to replace a water heater” and “sewer smell in the yard” and “does homeowners insurance cover hail damage”.

Those are pages. One each, written for that question, is what a custom build actually is. It is not a nicer Home page.

The same gap is now costing work in a second place. When a homeowner asks ChatGPT or Gemini for a plumber, the answer names two or three companies, and it names the ones whose pages answered the question in liftable sentences.

A Services page listing eight bullet points has nothing to lift. That is the difference between having a website and being the answer.

Questions people actually ask

Straight answers, no upsell attached

Is a custom website worth it for a contractor?

A custom site is worth it once the website is a real source of work rather than a business card. Below that, a $16-a-month template is the correct purchase. The dividing line is not company size — it is whether jobs arrive because someone searched, or only because someone referred.

What is the real difference between a template and a custom site?

A template constrains what the page can say to what the theme supports. A custom build starts from what a customer is searching for and writes the page for it. The visible difference is usually speed and structure; the difference that earns money is that every page targets a real query.

Are template websites bad for SEO?

Not inherently. Templates give you title tags and a sitemap, which covers the basics. What they do not give you is per-page schema, a heading structure built around real queries, or fast pages once a theme, slider and plugin stack are loading ahead of your phone number.
